This last summer they were doing a complete overhaul of the electrical system so they just had water and sewer. I did a google search of campgrounds in West Yellowstone which is just outside the west entrance. The only gateway towns that would work would be West Yellowstone and Gardiner north. Cooke City northeast does not have any campgrounds with services. All of these campgrounds are right in the town of West Yellowstone or on the edge.

One summer 7 yrs ago my parents took me, my daughter and grandson to Jackson with their 5th wheel. It is on the main street right behind the Virginia Lodge. While not the most scenic campground it was clean, had grass, and we enjoyed our stay there. One afternoon we watched parasailers jump off the top of the ski hill next to the campground. They ended up landing in the field right next to us. I found their website but they did not have rate information availabe but I do remember it was pretty reasonable to stay there.

While the location required a little extra driving it actually wasn’t too bad. You would want to stay there a couple of days though otherwise you wouldn’t get to see very much or take the time to enjoy what you are seeing.

Camping as it was NOT meant to be This place has location, as it is close to canyons and lake Yellowstone, but doesn’t offer much more when it comes to camping. It is managed by a third party vendor, not the Park Service. Additionally, you must unhook if you have a pull behind because the lot is not long enough. The driveways are so narrow that separate your slot from the perimeter tree line, you have to hook up and unhook very quickly because other campers will be waiting on you since they will be unable to get past until you are done.

Everything is one- way, so they have to wait. Since the park is full all the time, you will have a line waiting on you. The bathrooms are clean but the showers don’t all work, leaving a backup of waiting campers. The showers are not on timers so a LOT of people hang out in the shower for half an hour or so.
